BiXX and Natalie Gioia Bring Armenian Influence and an Unconventional Structure to “Armenian Rhapsody”
Inspired by Yanni’s “Prelude” and the sound of the Armenian duduk, the October 9 release developed into one of BiXX and Natalie Gioia’s most ambitious collaborations to date.
American trance DJ and producer BiXX reunites with vocalist, composer and pianist Natalie Gioia for “Armenian Rhapsody,” releasing October 9, 2026. The track began with a very specific reference point for BiXX: Yanni’s “Prelude,” a composition he first heard performed live at the Acropolis many years ago. What stayed with him was the sound of the Armenian duduk, an instrument he had wanted to incorporate into a trance production ever since.

The Duduk That Started the Idea
“The original idea for this track came from Yanni’s track, ‘Prelude,’” BiXX explains. “It features one of the most beautiful sounding instruments in the world, the Armenian duduk.”
BiXX had previously used “Prelude” as part of a custom intro for one of his performances at Lumi, but “Armenian Rhapsody” gave him the opportunity to explore the influence in an original production. The first version of the track was built around a new, “Prelude”-style breakdown in which the duduk had a much larger presence. In practice, however, the instrument proved so powerful that it competed with the vocal whenever the two played together.
That forced the production in a different direction. Rather than remove the duduk, BiXX changed how it was used, softening its presence and placing it between Gioia’s vocal passages. “What is wonderful about trance is we can bring in all kinds of native instrument sounds and concepts into the breakdown to make the track more unique and epic,” he says.
Natalie Gioia Changes the Original Plan
That change became much larger once Gioia began working on the track. Working with an orchestral specialist, she replaced the original breakdown concept with an extended composition of her own. She developed the melody and chord progression, wrote and performed the vocals, and studied Armenian in order to create lyrics sung in the language.
When BiXX first received the new breakdown, he loved it but was unsure how to make it work within a conventional trance arrangement. It was more than twice the length of what he considered an already long breakdown, making it difficult to approach as a typical club or label-focused release.
“Natalie surprised me,” BiXX says. “When she first sent it to me, I was blown away, but I did not know what to do with it. The breakdown was so long—too long to play live and too long for most trance tracks and labels.”
Rather than cutting it down, he decided to build around it. “I quickly got my mind out of the negative thinking mode. Why not let Natalie be Natalie and build around this beautiful masterpiece?”
The duduk was softened further within the breakdown, while the orchestral elements were given room to develop around Gioia’s vocal. BiXX describes the finished section as “an orchestral, angelic cinematic experience,” with the scale and emotional movement of a film score. “The breakdown is all about triggering emotions and goosebumps.”

Why It Became a Rhapsody
Interestingly, the track was not originally intended to be a rhapsody at all. That concept emerged because of what Gioia created.
BiXX began thinking about Bohemian Rhapsody and, specifically, the familiar story of its unconventional length creating resistance to its viability as a radio record. Rather than viewing the length of his own production as something that needed correcting, he began treating it as part of the idea.
“I knew we needed to break the mold and make this a rhapsody of sorts,” he says. “A freeform musical composition with contrasting moods, melodies and emotional swings. The original idea had nothing to do with a rhapsody concept, but once Natalie did her part, it was my job to honor her brilliant work.”
The structure reflects that thinking. “Armenian Rhapsody” begins with an uplifting three-note riff before moving into its long orchestral breakdown. Another melody enters during the energy climb and drop. In the final phrase of the drop, BiXX introduces a new riff before transitioning back to the three-note melody heard at the beginning of the track.
That return is one of BiXX’s favorite moments in the production because it brings the otherwise contrasting sections back together. “Many different melodies and sounds—the track is like a rhapsody.”
BiXX and Natalie Gioia’s Sixth Collaboration
“Armenian Rhapsody” is approximately the sixth project BiXX and Gioia have made together. BiXX first became familiar with her work through her vocal on Alex M.O.R.P.H.’s “The Reason,” before RAM Boon introduced the two artists.
Their working process developed gradually. For BiXX, part of that process was learning when not to give Gioia too much direction. Depending on the project, he may begin with a reference track, a written description or a demo, but he now deliberately avoids defining every element before she begins.
“I give Natalie total creative freedom,” he says. “She makes my ideas much better. I try to be very careful about limiting Natalie’s creative direction in a track. Sometimes demos can box her in too much. My best success with Natalie is to let her do what she does best.”
That approach has already shaped previous records between the pair. On “Beauty Within,” for example, BiXX approached Gioia with the idea of creating a tribute to his late mother based around a lesson she had taught him about the importance of being beautiful on the inside. Gioia composed the breakdown and wrote the lyrics, developing his initial idea into the finished record.
BiXX sees “Armenian Rhapsody” as another progression in that working relationship. “We have a style and a process that, in my opinion, makes each new project better than the last,” he says. “Armenian Rhapsody may be my best track to date.”
Still Recognizably BiXX
For all of its unusual elements, BiXX does not see the track as a departure from his established sound. Long emotional breakdowns, strong melodies and large melodic drops have been recurring elements throughout his work. What changes here is how far those ideas are allowed to develop.
He is particularly deliberate about the opening. “I hate boring intros,” BiXX says. “So many trance tracks have boring intros. It’s like they don’t want to make the track too good too soon, but then it never gets good. If you start off great and keep getting better, then you have a listening experience.”
The three-note opening melody, Gioia’s vocal, the extended breakdown and the melodic drop all represent different sides of what he considers his sound. When asked which section feels most distinctly BiXX, he compares the question to choosing a favorite child: “All of them. Just differently.”
BiXX has built his catalogue around uplifting and melodic trance, with Beatport Top 10 releases including “Marvelous Universe,” “Flight of Life,” “Above the Clouds,” “Yes I Can,” “Purpose,” “After Dark” and “Trance at the Opera,” as well as the Beatport #1 releases “Still We Rise” and “Victoria.” His music receives more than three million Spotify streams annually, with more than 25 million total streams across his catalogue since 2019.His broader approach remains summarized by his longstanding philosophy: music is the vehicle, inspiration is the message.
With “Armenian Rhapsody,” BiXX’s goal is less complicated than the production behind it. “To be honest, I want them to be blown away and put the track on repeat,” he says. “I would hope they experience many emotions throughout the track and forget about life for just a short time. Then come back in a happier, more positive state of mind.”
