A-Eno-Acid’s The Last Jack Closes on a Lone Ambient 303

The drums stay dry and clipped, the bassline hugs the kick, and the 303 carries the melody on top. Most of The Last Jack works that late-1980s Chicago acid house frame — dark, unhurried, more pressure than release — and the closing stretch pulls the drums right back to leave a lone ambient 303 line on its own.

A few later cuts drift toward early-1990s Detroit, which keeps the record from settling into a single mood. The feel is smoky and patient throughout, with texture doing more work than any big gesture, and it is aimed at the back end of a set rather than the opening hour. The Last Jack is the new album from A-Eno-Acid.
