Returning with their new catchy single, French indie band Astral Bakers are back with “A Dog in a Manger,” a track that deftly weaves moments of reflection with intensity to create a track that is equally dynamic and captivating. Blending indie, pop rock, and soft grunge, each member now takes on a more defined role in this ever-evolving puzzle, where voices intertwine and roles shift—for the first time, drummer Zoé steps up as lead singer. It’s a track that’s full of melancholy, chilled ambience and an emotion that Astral Bakers convey like few others.
“The expression “a dog in a manger” comes from a fable in which a dog jealously guards the hay in the stable, preventing other animals from eating it even though he has no use for it himself. It’s a way of illustrating how jealousy and stubbornness can make for a toxic mix. And yet, this is a radiant track, carried by a narrator who observes her character with distance and kindness, offering a barely veiled critique of the excesses of our society.” – Astral Bakers
Opening with a steady, laid-back guitar and drum rhythm, the song allows the lead female vocalist’s voice to shine, setting a contemplative tone. As the track builds, the chorus introduces a surge of energy, with tastefully layered harmonies helping to elevate the emotional impact of the track. The song repeats this structure before introducing the bridge, which begins quietly, gradually intensifying as the vocalist holds notes that tie the song together, creating a perfect transition back into the final chorus. The careful ebb and flow of intensity in “A Dog in a Manger” showcases the band’s ability to craft intricate arrangements that mirror the complexities of emotion.
This new single arrives as Astral Bakers continue to captivate listeners with their unique blend of Indie rock and soft grunge, drawing comparisons to acts like Big Thief and Nirvana. Comprised of Sage, Theodora, Nico Lockhart, and Zoé Hochberg, the band has spent over a decade honing their craft, working with notable artists such as Woodkid, Clara Luciani, and Pomme. Their music is a fusion of melodic singalongs, well-thought-out vocal layers, and dynamic instrumentation.
Ahead of their performance at The Great Escape Festival, Astral Bakers are proving why they are one of the bands defining the modern music landscape, and if “A Dog in a Manger” is a sign of what is to come, then it’ll be exciting to hear what they come out with next.
