When the Bells Refuse to Behave

Chris Ianuzzi – “The Bells Rang On” (Satellite Symphonics) — out July 25, 2025

Four minutes and forty-one seconds of mischief: Chris Ianuzzi turns pealing chimes into bait, luring you into a corridor where synths warp like heat haze and rhythms wink in and out of frame. “The Bells Rang On” is hooky—deliberately, defiantly so—but its charms arrive skewed from the far left field, a flicker of menace behind the grin. It’s not a track to “get” so much as to touch: hand to flame, impulse over explanation.

Ianuzzi’s current arc—post-punk wiring spliced into synth-heavy electronica—has grown more fearless with each release. The single feels engineered for sensation first, detail second: corroded bass pressure, bell tones pitched like optical illusions, and a vocal presence that hovers rather than explains. Mixed for immersive impact and ready for Dolby spaces, it pushes air as much as it moves meters, building micro-hooks that lodge in memory without ever settling into a predictable grid.

Context matters. After “Reality Games,” a stark nod to America’s mood, “The Bells Rang On” conjures its own surreal zeitgeist. That famous maxim—“Buy the ticket, take the ride,” attributed by Ianuzzi to Hunter S. Thompson—hangs over the piece like a dare. You hear the veteran craft of someone who’s lived inside machines: years alongside Suzanne Ciani, early stints with Vangelis and Peter Baumann, and a fascination with new tools that never tips into gimmickry.

What sticks is the balance: apocalyptic grins, yes, but also a devilish sense of fun. The bells keep ringing because they refuse to resolve—like a Cheshire cat smile that stays after the cat vanishes. Take the ride.
