The Berlin trio’s new album explores new wave, post-punk, and synth-pop with an introspective and song-driven approach
On 24th January, Dina Summer returns with their highly anticipated second album, Girls Gang — a versatile collection of 11 tracks that delve into themes of empowerment (‘No More Tears’ & ‘Girls Gang’), outsiderhood (‘Alien’ & ‘Zombie’), impermanence (‘Promise Me’), nostalgia (‘Halkidiki’), and relationships (‘Nothing To Hide’ & ‘Hypnotized’). While their debut album was characterised by its club-centric sound, drawing from Italo disco and ’90s electro influences, this new release explores a richer palette of new wave, post-punk, and synth-pop.
Girls Gang is a step in a more song-oriented direction for the trio, often featuring real bass and guitar, showcasing a more vocal-driven performance from frontwoman Dina, incorporating more singing alongside her trademark spoken words. Yet, it retains the same catchy melodies Dina Summer are known for, offering both indie pop hymns and a few undeniable club anthems.
Tracks like ‘Schall & Rauch’ carry a powerful nostalgic yearning, with emotionally charged lyrics and an intense energy that balances euphoria and melancholy. ‘Nothing To Hide’ is a dramatic ode to irresistible attraction, with theatrical vocals and striking guitar riffs creating a monumental sense of grandeur. ‘Alien’ pays homage to outsiders with a thick kick, addictive basslines, and extraterrestrial vocals, while ‘Halkidiki’ invites listeners to embrace their happiest memories with its spirited, feel-good bassline and dreamy vocals.
‘Promise Me’ features a soul-stirring vocal performance from dark disco heavyweight Curses and elegant guitar lines from Joshua Murphy, crafting a transcendental atmosphere. Meanwhile, ‘FOMO’ and ‘Disco Goth’ deliver pulsating, dancefloor-ready energy.
Dina Summer are the Berlin-based collaborative band project of Kalipo and duo Local Suicide, fronted by Greek native Dina P. Drawing from influences like 80s Italo disco, EBM, and early 00s electroclash, the trio’s unique dark retro-futuristic sound combines clubby basslines, epic melody hooks, and fun lyrics. Following their 2022 debut album Rimini, which earned rave reviews and over two million streams, Girls Gang builds on Dina Summer’s reputation as one of the most exciting acts in electronic music.
Girls Gang, the incredible new LP from Dina Summer, arrives on Local Suicide’s label Iptamenos Discos on January 24th.
